The Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest pyramid in Egypt and the earliest large building in the world made entirely of stone. It was designed by Imhotep, the king’s architect, priest and physician, who later became a god of medicine.
The pyramid began as a flat mastaba and was enlarged five times into a six-step structure about 60 metres high. It stands at the centre of a vast walled complex of courtyards, chapels and false doors — a stone version of the royal palace for the afterlife.

Practical tips
- Entry to the complex is a separate ticket from the Saqqara area ticket.
- The site is fully exposed — bring water and sun protection.
- Combine it with the Serapeum and the noble tombs nearby.
