The Great Sphinx of Giza is the largest monolithic statue in the ancient world, carved from a single knoll of limestone left in the quarry that supplied the pyramids. It faces east towards the rising sun, with the body of a lion and the head of a king wearing the royal nemes headdress.
Most scholars date it to the reign of Khafre, around 2558 BC, making it roughly contemporary with the Second Pyramid. It was already buried in sand by the time of the New Kingdom, and the “Dream Stele” between its paws records how Thutmose IV cleared it after a prophetic dream.
What you will see
- The 73-metre-long statue, with the face badly eroded by wind and time.
- The Dream Stele of Thutmose IV at its chest.
- The Giza Plateau, with the three pyramids and the Sphinx in one view.
Practical tips
- The Sphinx is included in the Giza Plateau area ticket — no separate ticket is required.
- The best light for photographs is in the morning, when the sun lights the face.
- The viewing terrace beside the Sphinx is usually quieter than the main plateau.
