Abydos was the cult centre of Osiris, god of the afterlife, and the temple built by Seti I is celebrated for the quality of its raised reliefs — many still crisp after three thousand years.
The temple contains seven sanctuaries, a king list naming seventy-six earlier rulers, and a famous relief sometimes described as a “helicopter” but actually a palimpsest of two carved texts.
