Memphis was the capital of Egypt for much of the Old Kingdom, founded around 3100 BC at the point where the Nile Valley opens into the Delta. Little of the city survives, but the site is now an open-air museum.
Its highlight is the colossal limestone statue of Ramesses II, nearly 13 metres long and displayed lying on its back, with a fine alabaster sphinx nearby.
