The temple of Hathor at Dendera is among the most complete in Egypt. Built in the Ptolemaic period and finished under the Roman emperors, its roof and ceilings survive almost intact, with colour still visible on many reliefs.
The hypostyle hall, the crypts, and the famous circular zodiac (now in the Louvre, with a cast in place) make Dendera a favourite with photographers and historians.

- The ceiling of the sky goddess Nut in the outer hypostyle.
- The rooftop chapels of Osiris, reached by a dark staircase.
- The crypts where the temple’s sacred objects were stored.
Practical tips
- Dendera is about an hour’s drive north of Luxor.
- Combine it with Abydos for a full day out of Luxor.
- The rooftop ascent is steep and narrow — not for claustrophobic visitors.
