Saqqara was the royal necropolis of the early Egyptian state. Kings of the first two dynasties were buried here, and it remained a place of burial and pilgrimage for more than three thousand years.
It is best known as the site of the Step Pyramid of Djoser — the first monumental stone building in history — but the necropolis also holds the pyramids of Unas and Teti, the Serapeum catacombs, and a remarkable set of decorated tombs of nobles and officials.
What you will see
- The Step Pyramid of Djoser and its vast funerary complex.
- The Pyramid Texts inside the pyramid of Unas.
- The Serapeum, the underground gallery of the Apis bulls.
- Painted tombs of Old Kingdom officials such as Mereruka.
Practical tips
- The area ticket and the Step Pyramid complex ticket are separate.
- Wear sturdy shoes — the site is large and sandy.
- Morning visits are cooler and quieter.
