The Great Pyramid of Giza was built as the tomb of the pharaoh Khufu (Cheops) during the 4th Dynasty, around 2560 BC. It is the largest and oldest of the three pyramids on the Giza Plateau, and the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. For roughly 3,800 years it remained the tallest building ever made by human hands.
Originally about 146.6 metres high and cased in polished white limestone, the pyramid now rises to around 138.5 metres. Its four sides are aligned to the cardinal points with astonishing precision, and the estimated 2.3 million limestone blocks were moved and set without wheels or iron tools.
What you will see
- The pyramid itself, with some of the original casing stones still visible near the base.
- The entrance on the north face, leading into the Descending Passage, the Grand Gallery and the King’s Chamber.
- The nearby Pyramid of Khafre and Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx just to the east.
- The Solar Boat Museum, home to a reconstructed funerary boat of Khufu.
Visiting the interior
Entering the pyramid is a separate ticket from the Giza Plateau area ticket, and numbers are limited each day. The passage is low, narrow and warm, so it is not recommended for anyone with claustrophobia, breathing difficulties or limited mobility. The interior closes for a short break around midday (approximately 12:00–13:00).
Practical tips
- Buy the area entry ticket first — it is required before you can add the pyramid interior.
- Visit early in the morning for cooler temperatures and softer light for photographs.
- Comfortable shoes, water and sun protection are essential; there is very little shade.
- The plateau is around 13 km from central Cairo and is easily reached by private car or taxi.
