The Colossi of Memnon are two enormous quartzite statues of the pharaoh Amenhotep III, each about 18 metres high. They stood at the entrance of his mortuary temple, once the largest temple complex in Egypt and now almost entirely vanished.
In antiquity the northern colossus was famous for emitting a musical sound at dawn, which Greek travellers identified as the voice of the hero Memnon — hence the name.
