For nearly five centuries the kings of the New Kingdom were buried in this dry, hidden valley on the west bank of the Nile at Luxor. Sixty-three tombs have been found, cut deep into limestone and decorated with scenes from the Book of the Dead and the Amduat.
The standard ticket admits you to three tombs of the day; the tombs of Tutankhamun and Seti I require separate, more expensive tickets. The colours of the painted reliefs remain astonishingly vivid.
What you will see
- Three decorated royal tombs of the day (selection rotates).
- The tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), an optional extra ticket.
- The tomb of Seti I, the longest and finest in the valley (extra ticket).
- The dramatic desert landscape of the Theban necropolis.
Practical tips
- Arrive at opening — it gets very hot and crowded by mid-morning.
- Photography inside the tombs normally requires a separate photo pass.
- There are no toilets or shade inside the valley itself.
