Karnak is not a single temple but a vast complex built and enlarged by successive kings over more than two thousand years. Its main sanctuary was dedicated to Amun-Ra, king of the gods, whose statue travelled here each year during the Opet Festival.
The scale is overwhelming: ten pylons, a sacred lake, obelisks, chapels and the Great Hypostyle Hall, where 134 columns up to 24 metres high fill an area large enough to hold Notre-Dame.
What you will see
- The Great Hypostyle Hall of Seti I and Ramesses II.
- The obelisk of Hatshepsut, still standing at almost 30 metres.
- The Sacred Lake and the scarab statue of Amenhotep III.
- The avenue of ram-headed sphinxes leading to the first pylon.
Practical tips
- Allow at least 2–3 hours; the site is enormous.
- Morning is cooler and quieter; the sound and light show runs in the evening.
- Keep your ticket if you plan to walk the Avenue of Sphinxes to Luxor Temple.
