Luxor Temple stands in the heart of the modern city of Luxor, on the east bank of the Nile. Unlike the neighbouring Karnak Temples, it was not dedicated to a god but to the renewal of kingship — it was here, in theory, that Egyptian pharaohs were crowned.
Construction began under Amenhotep III in the 18th Dynasty, around 1400 BC, and was later expanded by Tutankhamun, Horemheb and Ramesses II, who added the great pylon, the obelisk and the colossal statues at the front. Alexander the Great also left his mark with a chapel in the sanctuary.
What you will see
- The Avenue of Sphinxes, the processional road that once linked Luxor Temple to Karnak.
- The massive first pylon of Ramesses II, with its two seated colossi and a 25-metre granite obelisk.
- The Colonnade of Amenhotep III and the great Court of Ramesses II.
- The Hypostyle Hall, the Barque Shrine and the sanctuary with its Roman-era frescoes.
Best time to visit
The temple is beautifully illuminated after sunset, when the crowds thin and the reliefs are easier to read in raking light. Early morning is the quietest and coolest time for photography. The site is within walking distance of Luxor’s corniche and many hotels.
Practical tips
- Entry to Luxor Temple is a separate ticket from Karnak Temples; keep both tickets if you plan to walk the Avenue of Sphinxes.
- Allow at least 1.5 hours to explore at an unhurried pace.
- Carry water and wear a hat — the open courts offer little shade.
- Combine it with Karnak in the same day, ideally Luxor Temple at sunset.
