How to Obtain a Visa to Egypt
All visitors to Egypt must:
- Hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry.
- Obtain a visa unless your nationality is exempt.
- Apply for a visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate, or, if eligible, purchase a visa on arrival at certain entry points.
Types of Egypt Visas
Egypt offers three main types of visas:
1. Entry Visa
- Valid for one month
- For travelers entering without a pre-purchased visa
2. Transit Visa
- For travelers passing through Egypt for a short period
3. Tourist Visa
- Valid for up to three months
- Available as single or multiple entries
- Most tourists obtain this visa through an embassy, consulate, or visa on arrival (for eligible nationalities)
Can You Extend a Tourist Visa?
Yes. A tourist visa can be extended through government offices such as Mogamma in Cairo or other official visa centers in major cities.
- There is a two-week grace period after expiration to extend the visa without fines.
- Extensions beyond the grace period may incur penalties.
How to Travel to Egypt
1. By Air (Most Common)
Most visitors arrive in Egypt by air. International flights land at:
- Cairo International Airport
- Sharm El Sheikh Airport
- Hurghada Airport
Travelers from eligible countries can purchase a one-month visa on arrival for $25 USD. Other nationalities must obtain a visa before traveling.
Eligible nationalities for visa on arrival:
Australia, Canada, Croatia, Georgia, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Macedonia, South Korea, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine
2. Overland Entry
Taba Border (Israel → Sinai)
- A Sinai-Only Visa is available for eligible nationalities, valid within the Sinai Peninsula.
- For full access to Egypt, a visa must be obtained from an Egyptian consulate before entry.
Important fees:
- $25 exit fee from Israel
- $12.50 entrance fee in Egypt (in addition to visa cost)
Rafah Border (Gaza)
- Currently closed for tourist entry
3. By Sea
Ferry travel is mostly limited to Aqaba (Jordan) → Nuweiba (Sinai).
- Fast ferry: $75 USD, approx. 1 hour
- Slow ferry: $65 USD, timing varies
- Vehicles can be transported for an additional fee
Visa on arrival at Nuweiba:
- One-month full visa for eligible nationalities: $25
- Sinai-Only visa for 2 weeks: free
- Other nationalities must arrange a visa beforehand
