They stood at the entrance of his mortuary temple, once the largest temple complex in Egypt and now almost entirely vanished.<\/p>\n<p>In antiquity the northern colossus was famous for emitting a musical sound at dawn, which Greek travellers identified as the voice of the hero Memnon \u2014 hence the name.<\/p>\n<h2>What you will see<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The two seated statues, with reliefs on their bases.<\/li>\n<li>Ongoing excavation of the temple behind them.<\/li>\n<li>Open fields on the west bank, with the Theban hills behind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Practical tips<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no entrance fee;
