Its main sanctuary was dedicated to Amun-Ra, king of the gods, whose statue travelled here each year during the Opet Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The scale is overwhelming: ten pylons, a sacred lake, obelisks, chapels and the Great Hypostyle Hall, where 134 columns up to 24 metres high fill an area large enough to hold Notre-Dame.<\/p>\n<h2>What you will see<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Great Hypostyle Hall of Seti I and Ramesses II.<\/li>\n<li>The obelisk of Hatshepsut, still standing at almost 30 metres.<\/li>\n<li>The Sacred Lake and the scarab statue of Amenhotep III.<\/li>\n<li>The avenue of ram-headed sphinxes leading to the first pylon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Practical tips<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Allow at least 2\u20133 hours; the site is enormous.<\/li>\n<li>Morning is cooler and quieter; the sound and light show runs in the evening.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your ticket if you plan to walk the Avenue of Sphinxes to Luxor Temple.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The largest temple complex ever built \u2014 a city of sanctuaries, pylons and hypostyle halls dedicated to Amun.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":18575,"template":"","monument-region":[564],"class_list":["post-18800","monument","type-monument","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","monument-region-luxor-upper-egypt"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.5 (Yoast SEO v28.6) -
